The Community Pharmacy Patient Safety Group (CPPSG) is delighted to make available the recording of its 2026 Patient Safety Lecture, held at the University of Nottingham in May 2026. The lecture was held in memory of Dr José Moss, former CPPSG Vice-Chair, whose dedication to medicines safety (in particular opioid safety), education and patient-centred care continues to influence the profession.
Hosted in partnership with the University of Nottingham’s School of Pharmacy during its centenary year, the lecture explored key issues relating to opioid safety, opioid stewardship, prescribing, medicines optimisation and improving care for people living with pain.
The programme included reflections from Martin Sadr-Kazemi, Chair of CPPSG and Medicines Safety Officer and Deputy Superintendent Pharmacist, Rowlands Pharmacy, on the Group’s ten-year journey and José’s contribution to patient safety; a presentation from Professor Matthew Boyd, Professor of Medicines Safety, Faculty of Science, University of Nottingham, on research into the prescribing and supply of fentanyl patches; and contributions from Malcolm Harrison, Chief Executive, CCA and Professor Barrie Kellam, Professor of Medicinal Chemistry & Head of School, University of Nottingham and Chair, Pharmacy Schools Council.
A particularly powerful part of the evening was the presentation from Antony Chuter, an expert patient and champion for people living with pain, who shared his lived experience and personal journey through pain management. His presentation provided an invaluable patient perspective and highlighted the importance of listening to and learning from those receiving care.
The event concluded with an expert panel discussion chaired by Professor Dame Jenny Harries DBE DL, Chair, Community Pharmacy England and Honorary Professor, University of Nottingham. The panel featured Antony Chuter and Martin Sadr-Kazemi along with:
- Professor Tony Avery OBE, National Clinical Director for Prescribing and GP in Nottingham, Professor of Primary Health Care, University of Nottingham,
- Professor Roger Knaggs, President, British Pain Society and Professor of Pain Management, Faculty of Science, University of Nottingham,
- Dr Anum Iqbal, Chief Pharmaceutical Officer’s Clinical Fellow 2025/26
The discussion explored practical and policy solutions to improve opioid safety and patient outcomes.
We encourage Schools of Pharmacy, educators, students, researchers and pharmacy professionals across all sectors to use this recording as a teaching, learning and professional development resource. By sharing the lecture more widely, we hope to continue Dr José Moss’s legacy of improving patient safety through collaboration, education and shared learning.
