Patient Safety is a priority for everyone working within community pharmacy. In 2016 a Community Pharmacy Quality Payments Scheme (QPS) was introduced. It was designed to reward the delivery of safe and effective care which takes into account patient experience.
The scheme was updated as part of the new Community Pharmacy Contractual Framework for 2019/20 to 2023/24 and renamed the Pharmacy Quality Scheme (PQS). The aim of the updated scheme is to encourage community pharmacy to integrate with the wider NHS system and support the delivery of even safer, accessible healthcare to patients by incentivising activities relating to; risk management and safety; medicine safety; prevention; primary care networks; Asthma and digital enablers.
As part of the update, the Patient Safety Group has worked closely with NHS England and PSNC to develop templates for:
- the monthly and annual Patient Safety Reports and risk review documents, which form part of the risk management and safety components of the scheme.
- the medicines audits, which form part of the medicine safety components of the scheme.
Patient Safety Group members are in the process of developing walk through documents and worked examples for the specific criteria relating to patient safety. These documents will be available shortly.
The Pharmacy Quality Scheme also includes criteria relating to sepsis. It requires 80% of all all pharmacy professionals to complete CPPE sepsis training and assessment and for professionals to apply learnings in a safe and appropriate way.
